JORDAN BARRY-BROWNE
ILLSTRIPS
Jordan Barry-Browne is a Dublin-based illustrator and cartoonist working under the name ILLstrips. His practice is rooted in traditional pen-and-ink drawing, comics and print, with influences ranging from underground comics and vintage illustration to music, film, popular culture and Japanese art and design.
His self-published comic series Cosmic Slop sits at the centre of his independent publishing practice, combining his interests in comics, music and visual storytelling. Alongside this, Jordan develops personal bodies of work exploring folklore, popular culture and the visual language of comics, cinema and illustration.
In recent years, his practice has taken him to Japan for artist residencies at Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo and Studio Kura in Fukuoka. His work at Tenjinyama explored the writings of Irish author Lafcadio Hearn and the cultural connections between Ireland and Japan. Most recently, at Studio Kura, he developed and exhibited Pansajin, an extensive body of work inspired by 1970s Japanese manga, tokusatsu, cinema and toy culture.
Alongside his personal practice, Jordan works professionally as a freelance illustrator and designer, producing artwork for music, publishing, posters, clothing and selected commercial projects.
He is currently based in Dublin, where he continues to develop Cosmic Slop and other independent projects while expanding his practice towards larger-format drawing and painting.
